Dietetics

What is a Registered Dietitian?

A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a trained and certified food and nutrition expert dedicated to promoting health through personalized nutrition advice. They translate complex scientific and medical nutrition evidence into practical guidance for individuals, families, and communities.

To become an RD in Ontario, candidates must:

  • Complete an accredited 4-year degree in food and nutrition sciences.

  • Finish a supervised practical training program or dietetic internship.

  • Pass the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination.

Registered Dietitians collaborate with clients, caregivers, and health professionals—including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists—to support health promotion, prevent diseases, and manage chronic and acute conditions. They work in diverse settings, from private practice to health care teams.
