Frequently Asked Questions
Why the Change?
Many medical services fall outside of OHIP, including sick notes, insurance forms, work absence forms, certain injections, and prescription renewals without a visit. These are known as Uninsured Services and are the patient’s responsibility. Until now, patients could only pay for uninsured services individually. Our new Block Fee Program lets you cover most of these services with one annual fee — no more worrying about individual charges.
What is a Block Fee?
A block fee is an optional flat-rate charge that covers a range of uninsured services for a 12 month period. Rather than paying separately for each service as needed, patients can opt to pay one upfront fee for the year to simplify payment and potentially reduce overall expenses. For added flexibility, you can enroll at any point during the year—including on the day you receive an uninsured service—allowing you to start coverage when it's most relevant to your needs.
For more information about Block Fees and Uninsured Services, click here to view the CPSO Patient Information Sheet.
Is the annual block fee mandatory?
No. The block fee is completely optional. You can still have access to all uninsured services at Citrus Medical without enrolling and continue paying per service. There will be no difference in the service provided whether paid through the block fee or per service.
Is the block fee refundable?
After payment is received, you will have 1 week (7 days) to request a full-refund. After 7 days, the fee is no longer refundable and will cover the 12-month period starting the date payment is received. If an uninsured service was covered during the first 7 days, payment for that service will be required prior to receiving the refund.
When does coverage begin and end?
Coverage begins on the date payment is received and lasts for 12 months. For example, if payment is received June 1, 2025, coverage will last from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026 inclusive.
What if I only need one form or note this year? Should I still pay the block fee?
If you expect to use only one uninsured service, it may be more cost-effective to pay per service. The annual block fee is ideal for patients or families who need multiple uninsured services each year.
Do all doctors at Citrus Medical participate in the block fee program?
All family doctors and urgent care doctors will have this program available. Specialists including allergists, hematologists, or hypertension specialists, do not have the annual block fee option.
Is the block fee covered by private insurance plans?
Some private insurance plans may cover block fees as part of the healthcare coverage, but it's crucial to check with your specific insurance provider.
Are doctors allowed to charge patients for services?
Yes. Not all services provided by doctors in Ontario are insured services covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). Please see The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Patient Information Sheet for additional details or contact information for the College’s Public Advisory Service.
